“Looks like the gods heard your prayers after all,” Sparkle said.

My prayer had been answered too late, though. Another friend’s blood was on my hands. I balled my guilt up into a tight invisible wad, and hid it as far away as I could in the back of my mind. Guilt wouldn’t help me to survive. Instead, it would cause me to falter, fail and die.

The guards gave chase; I raced away in search of a place to hide.

An arctic chill hit, as if the gates of Helheim opened, and blew in a hard-to-handle breeze.

My quick gait grew slower. Winding my way through the neighborhood, I stumbled into a parking deck, and after several tries, found an old sedan unlocked. My body felt weak, like I needed a massive iron intake.

This was the closest to safe as I was going to get.

Too shocked to stay awake, I passed out.
